Skirmishes unfolded directly on—and immediately around—the cabin site, where more than 2,000 soldiers were killed or captured, including most of the 49th Virginia and much of the 13th Virginia.
Many of the soldiers engaged here were moving toward Cold Harbor, only 3.1 miles away, where up to 80% of Union casualties occurred in some assaults. Of the five battles in which General Robert E. Lee personally led troops, the Battle of Bethesda Church is one.

Just .2 miles from a crucial supply line intersection, it was a highly sought-after, and heavily defended piece of land. Having numerous skirmishes in a very close proximity, approximately 2,200 men perished or were wounded here.
